Dave Hickey
David Richard Hickey was born on October 23, 1952 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His mother played piano and organ. Dave definitely inherited her music genes, which peaked his interest in music. While in high school, Dave played guitar and sang with a large folk chorus group. Another member of the group was Don Moore, his future McGinty band mate. After completing high school Dave and Don were members of the group Shanty, a very popular celtic group that played and toured eastern Canada extensively.
After the breakup of Shanty in 1976, Dave and Don along with John Ferguson formed McGinty in 1977. The first few years were spent playing pubs and universities around eastern Canada. Their hard work paid off, and eventually led to touring across this country and internationally representing Nova Scotia and Canada and building a large following of devoted McGinty fans, During his 33 years with McGinty Dave played guitar and banjo and eventually bass.
Dave also had a passion for the Sea and all things nautical. Any of his spare time was spend restoring and sailing the ocean on board his cottage-on-the-water, his boat, the "Sally Brown". David was an active member of Armdale Yacht Club for over 30 years and his passion for the sea led to instructing courses as a active bridge member of the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron.
David Hickey passed away on December 25, 2010. David loved the Christmas Season and will always be missed by his McGinty brothers and the whole music community, especially during the Holiday Season.
