John Ferguson
John Neil Ferguson was born on July 26, 1953 and grew up in Caribou Marsh, Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. He was a proud Cape Bretoner and was especially fond of his Scottish Heritage.
John's passion for folk music started in high school, but really took root while attending Xavier College in Sydney, NS. In the early to mid 70's he played with two very popular groups. He was an original member of both Milller's Jug and later Kiltarlity. John relocated to Halifax and in 1977 helped form McGinty with Dave Hickey and Don Moore.
During his 35 years as a member of McGinty he played fiddle and guitar as well as bouzouki. In the later years between McGinty dates he also had a very busy and successful solo career. He toured nationally and released 4 solo recordings as well as duo recordings with both Buddy MacDonald and Roger Stone. He loved Cape Breton in the fall and was a regular performer either with McGinty or as a solo performer at the annual Celtic Colours Festival events on Cape Breton Island.
John had an encyclopedic memory for dates and places. He was admired by all for his extensive knowledge of stories, folk songs and fiddle tunes. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing in his beloved Cape Breton.
John Ferguson passed away on October 6, 2012. He will always be missed by his McGinty brothers as well as the entire folk music community.
